A centralized Louisville neighborhood with an ideal location for shopping, parks and an energetic community. St. Matthews offers an array of local businesses. From local breweries and bars to authentic Thai and Vietnamese restuarants, there are many unique local restaurants providing a variety of selections for any palette. The city’s largest shopping district, including Louisville's two largest malls. There are also three major hospitals in St. Matthews, which are some of the busiest in the city.
Originally known as Gilman’s Point, in 1851 the city’s name was changed to St. Matthews following the completion of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. One of Louisville’s oldest Catholic churches, Holy Trinity, was completed in 1882. Trinity High School would later be established in association with Holy Trinity. Following the 1937 Great Flood, many families relocated to St. Matthews for its higher elevation. What began as a small suburb in louisville experienced rapid growth and development which continues today.
St. Matthews homes feature many architectural styles, giving each home a unique character. The charming Cape Cod homes are a popular option for new families, while the traditional colonial homes support the growing family. Famous Louisville architect Stratton Hammon designed many homes in the colonial revival style throughout St. Matthews. Craftsman bungalows, Tudors and mid-century ranches are common as well.
Residents of St Matthews are typically families, adults, and young professionals that are established and working; however, there are many younger residents that live in the area too. Many of the residents grew up in the St Matthews area and established their family in the neighborhood.
The City of St. Matthews works with the St. Matthews Chamber of Commerce to keep the community dynamic. Throughout the year there are a variety events and festivals to bring residents together and support local businesses. The Halloween event provides entertainment for the children in the area and Light Up St. Matthews in Brown Park is a popular tradition among families. Every Spring St. Matthews holds the annual street festival, which brings out local vendors and residents.
